There is a difference between upgrading and enchanting. upgrading it means you go from a level 1 pendant to a level 2 pendant. Enchanting means you go from a +0 level 1 pending to a +1 level 1 pendant. As with most things in this game if you try to enchant meaning add pluses to an item there is a chance it will either simply disappear with no return or you will receive crystals depending on the item.
