Is this game still worth playing?

This was my first MMO ever I played back in the early 2000's when I was a kid. Left the game and came back on and off over the decade as I grew up and played other games. Is this game still fun? How's the pop? What server is best to get back into?

it's an AFK grinder (game now has a built in bot function) that may or may not be fun once you get to end game. The game has multiple systems (jewels, artifacts, agathions etc) that you will have to pay rl money to acquire, and a massive amount of grinding for exp, adena etc. It's kinda like a mobile game you run in the background and check on 2-3 times a day, and occasionally dip into your wallet to help gear your character.

If that sounds fun to you, Chronos is generally the better populated server that has a decent market. Naia is predominantly people trying and failing to F2P, with a dead market.

If you want to have fun in this game get your wallet ready to spend endless amount of dollars for XP and vitality maintain pots to level up, then more endless money to get items. Nothing can be farmed in the game anymore like it used to be (for example to get gear from raids), in order to get items you must pay rl money to l2 store (which is basically a casino, you play with chances) or buy adena like most players do and then buy the item(s) you want from other players.

Then like Mete said above, you just leave your char afk 24/7 to auto farm.

If you wanna login in the game for free go for it, till 105-106 lvl to see how the game has changed over the years, otherwise, if you are not willing to spend real money and leave your char afk xp, don't bother logging in at all :D and yes, Chronos is the best server compared to Naia.

That's a shame. What about Lineage 2 Classic and Aden? What is Aden?

Lineage 2 Classic is dead and full of bots. No active players.

Aden is the Essence version (something like a mix from live and classic). If you google search l2 essence you will see what Aden is. Also, aden is same as live, you leave your char afk to xp and it's pay2win BUT the difference with live is that you will get pk, a lot.

Unfortunately, this game has lost its greatest charm, which was finding mobs to spoil or drop and equip yourself.

It's a game for the rich and no real money you get nothing and since it's free with no account limits there are many who have thousands of accounts and reopen the free events and you'll have almost zero chance of getting anything

also in Naia there are no longer healing tanks or support since it has been based on a game of yul and feoh the xp adena on top of everything

if you want an afk game while enjoying your time and don't mind spending 1000 euros a month this is your game

That's depressing as shit to hear. Grew up with it and detached from it when GoD came out.

It's very depressing,  a 3 month old toon with a good credit score can just pummel a toon you've been growing for 10+ years.  You can drop an average middleclass salary on your toon and still be hit for 3 mill damage  before you even see it coming .  Sad to say, don't waste your time/money.

I wonder to myself how much adena would a person who is either new or returning to the game need to be truly competitive and find this game enjoyable. 10 Trillion adena? 50 Trillion??? And how does this player go about getting that kind of adena quickly without  violating EULA or spending their mortgage on "event" sales...because there's really no other way in game for a new or low-geared returning player to obtain  trillions of adena fast otherwise.

If going through similar mental gymnastics is fun for you, then yes, this game is worth playing. If not, then do yourself a favor and find another game. 😄

Consider L2 as a Hobby not just a game.

They are right, yes we need to spend thousands to be able to play decently and gear up your Character to your liking but that is how hobbies are, we spend on them. some people play golf, some play billiards and others spend thousands of dollars to buy Cigars that they just burn.. literally burn and yet they enjoy them.

if you enjoy playing L2 play it within your means, NCSOFT is not Forcing you to spend, well not DIRECTLY forcing you to do so but it is really all up to you. i enjoy playing it because i want to see my Character (toon) grow once in a while, yes i envy those with top gear but it is not within my means so what i do is not compete with them but i try my best to gear up better everyday. at least save up some adena to be able to upgrade something that is not worth billions and billions of adena.

i suggest you try it yourself and see of you sill enjoy the game as it is. then it is up to you if you will spend money on it. just get the prestige pack so you hit the ground running.

I agree with Crossmouth, if you like L2, you can play this game in Naia or Chronos, check the hour zone to chose where to play, or chose Naia/Chronos for less/more people, this is important to find places to hunt for example.

Another thing, i play every day since 5 years ago, my main characters are lv.110, i do not spend real money more than 20/25 dollars in total in those years, i m a happy player, i enjoy the game and the progress of my characters, if you don t focus in the top players/gear you can play this game and you can find fun. Your characters will be grow up day by day, and your gears too. Is real, the game is designed to spend real money, but i can tell you, NC give to Free to players almost through the free events, the oportunity to grow up, power and gears to. You need to be heedful to the events anounced in this webpage and take advantage from these ones.

yes Kale is correct, there are times, NCSOFT provides good upgrades for Free, free meaning you need Ncoin and sometimes sacrifice (waking up early for me) during the last "click" event where i got decent items to upgrade my skills and Artifacts. so yes there are rare times that NCSOFT gives something.

you know, everything in REAL LIFE has something in exchange. food = money, service = money, enjoyment = money, pleasure = money. that is how life goes and it will not change unless there is an apocalyptic phenomenon that happens and food, services, entertainment, pleasure are exchanged for shells maybe? or barter or bottle caps? haha! but then, there will always be an exchange. nothing is free.

I think the first few responses that you received from this post are correct only if you choose to focus on the "Supers" of this game. These are peeps that have spent thousands and from there made this game their own private super market. If you choose to try to keep up with the "Jonese" you better have very big pockets.

From that, let me say that this game is still one of the best games that could be. Meaning, if the owners and GM's gave a damn this game, for its age, has all the potential and more of the newer games that are currently coming out. But it seems they keep making changes for the worse and they have no plans to fix it. Spoilers that have nothing to spoil, Erthias that can't make "love potions" because the items no-longer exist. Areas that have no meaning because you lvl pass them in less than 2 hours. Shops that have a few basic mates that you need and other than that are useless. Basically, the wrong company owns this game and should sell it to someone that gives a damn. They don't.

World of Warcraft came out around the same time as L2 and the differences is incredible.  They should have sold this game to Blizzard 10yrs ago. All that being said you can still find enjoyment in this game without opening up your pockets...to much. The game gives you enough gear and items to get to a lvl where you can join a clan, make friends, and have fun. Occasionally you might have to put a little cash into it to get a little of this and a little of that. But its only if you choose to go that route. It's a highly afk game with active time spent doing Instances with friends, zones solo or with friends, and AFK setup that is not supposed to happen, but everybody does it. Because all of the basic items are free i'd say try it for a week or 2, make sure you make 2 or 3 characters for buffs and heals, and go from there. DD of choice these days would be a DeathKnight. You might find that it can be fun. Or not.

I would say playing L2 for two weeks will give completely wrong impression on the game. In two weeks you will go by quests, move from one area to another every hour, get a lot of skills and free items and grow till 105 or even 106... which is "just" 10 levels below 116 which is a good level in game now.... and here everything will stop for good. I have a twink Tyr (I have invested into it maybe a $100 for a blessed exalted pack and some other cheap items). it is 109 now and it was 106 half a year ago. xping in EV duo with Iss 110 for half a year plus Castilla and IT, Crisis Instances from time to time.

So, once you reach 106 magic level the progress will be very panful and slow if you don't buy items for 300-500b to boost your char. Plus on the levels 107-108 nobody takes you even to 105 Dailies, so you activity level will be low, just non stop afk farm. If you are ready for it, go !

you're all missing the part where he said he's returning to game, meaning he played when it was an actual game.  What we have now is a disgrace to the name lineage 2.   Truth is, from 99-105  is what the rest of the game is, afk land.  Sit and watch your toon play it self.   We used to grind live, quests live, raids, pvp,  explore live, thats gone!  Find an active clan now means a clan with many others that you can sit in their party afk.  There are a handful of dailies for decent xp but no drop.  We've all been doing the exact same dailies for like 6 years now.  No spoiling when ya need a break from your main, no crafting as a side game,   the have removed almost all content at this point, no cata's or aa.   those saying it's fun f2p, honestly, I have no idea where they are because they will NEVER be in the areas 95% of the server are.   The free event that 1 guy mentioned, I got to play it once in the 3 weeks it ran because the time of it was so bad.  As a beta veteran, I say again, don't waste your time/money.

Hi Ballkain, i have a question for this, what do you mean with areas with 95% of people?  i tell this because i m a happy f2p lv.110, i go to hunt alone with coctail to ivory tower crater and always to much people there, with two chars, DD+Iss i go to silent valley, to much hard find place to hunt there, when i go to Tannor Canyon, never find place there, to much people too, Field of silence to much people. Alligator island and Fields of mirrors yes, i find place to hunt there. I don t know, the only zones when my characters fight adequately are Crater, Silent valley, Tannor Canyon, Field of silence. But is to hard to finde place to hunt there. Most of times i go there and say, Why are these zones the only zones to go, why not more spots in Tannor for example, more spots in silent valley, field of silence, for example, or, more areas like these.

Anyway, if you said the 95% of people are in other zones, what happen with my zones full of people?

you are in spots where the only other toons are people's alts or bots farming adena, the places that are hard to find spots are more likely "real" players.   f2p will not be farming tanor w/ a 2 man party, you'll need real party there.  try talking to the people in crator, try making a grp for there, you'll see what i mean fast.  the game doesn't start till 110, i'd even say realistically 112.  if you are happy farming crator, by all means, continue as the goal of a game should be happy/fun imo.  the 95% of player base i speak of never stepped foot in ivory crator.  you didn't mention how long it took to get 110.  how is your 110 aden solo going and are you doing 105 dailies in partys every day?  not trying to be rude but i'm guessing no, as with your gear, no 1 will party you.

you quit before, you will quit again. dont waste people's time explaining things

welcome to L2, many of the best players/people that played this game took breaks, they did not quit for the reasons people are quitting now, this game doesn't even resemble the old game many people left.  The only thing the same is the out dated graphics.   Years ago you could be a strong midgrade player and still compete, well built parties/skill could take on top cp's, that is not the case now and old school players should be warned of this.   When I took a break, you'd of been laughed at for having bloody gear.

After all these years of playing, L2 is more of a hobby now.

I login, talk to my clan, in the chat. (or Discord or Viber...) I XP a little, I try different classes (the Dark Knight is pretty good :)

NCsoft's "Project TL" is rumored to come out soon. I am kind of hyped for that one!

Anyway, for me it's relaxing. So, yes I would say that YES, it's still worth playing!
