Level 25 Moon Armor Sets - "Which do I choose?"

I'm at the point of progression where my next choice will change my approach and playstyle to the game drastically.

While the Robes seem useful for soloing (Mana Regeneration, Attack Speed, Spell Casting Speed) they seem less impactful in a party situation where you are the buffer between insane dps wizards and the aggression from the Tank. So following this line of reasoning, "What works best in group play," I'm left with the choice of Light Armor or Heavy Armor.

Skill 252 1.jpg Light Armor Mastery
When equipped with light armor, increases P. Def. by 12.6, Casting Spd. by 90%, Atk. Spd. by 25%, and MP Recovery Bonus by 20%.

Does this mean I cast 10% slower with Light Armor?
Does this mean I attack 25% faster or slower?
Does this mean I recover MP 20% slower?

Skill 253 1.jpg Heavy Armor Mastery
When equipped with heavy armor, increases P. Def. by 11.6, Casting Spd. by 71%, and Atk. Spd. by 25%.

So, when you'll start acting as a buffer as a wc/ol, giving a full buff will drain majority, or even all of your mana (depending on how many buffs you have to use). If you want to use some of your skills on top of that, you will need the +mana and +mana reg from the robes. If you plan on soloing a lot, then I'd think about heavy or light, maybe even if you're playing in a small group with fighters too, but if you are partying with mages, I'd definitely go for the robe.

Thank You. It would seem that if I'm playing with a Majority of Fighters then Light Armor seems to be a happy medium. Heavy Armor does seem more for soloing now that you mention it. Does wearing Light Armor give you the increased Mana Regeneration of 20%? It reads oddly to me. Also, does wearing it affect your castspeed by -10%?

Wearing a light armor increases all those stats. Keep in mind though, that as a mostly mage character, you have your passive skill since lvl 1, which you didn't have to learn, so you might've missed it, which increases your casting speed if you wear a robe. In the end of the day, you will have the most casting speed, most mana, and least p def in robe. You'll have the highest p def, least casting speed and least mana in heavy. Light will be somewhere in the middle. If you plan on playing meele and hitting mobs, especially in solo, then go for heavy. If you will play mostly like a buffer, sometimes casting a sleep on top of your buffs but not doing too much other than that, then go for robe. If you don't know how you want to/will be able to play, then light might be the safest bet, but in the long run, you'll probably end up going with robes, because the higher level you are, the less effective you will be at actually dealing damage as a buffer in this game.

The only thing I'm not sure of is atk speed. You'll have the same attack speed in light and heavy, but you also have a passive skill since lvl 1, that increases your atk speed in robe, so I don't know which is stronger, that passive or the light/heavy armor mastery. If you can figure that one out somehow, then you might even come to the conclusion that even if you play a meele style for now, you could deal the most amount of damage in a robe set. You might need someone else to tank though.

What kind armor set did you decide?

I am orc shaman too

Go for Robe, later game you will need more mana pool than p.def. And getting other passive level up you will lost a lot SP.

I personally am going for light . I still get the mana regen but i will get some more DEFF + ATTCK SPD . Sometimes i want to go solo / small party . and the mana i need until level 40 is just for might and shield basically.

You get more mana and mana reg going for robe, its worth it.

I just saw the passive skills i got ... and yeah now when I think about it robe makes more sense cuz of the 3 passive skills that gives u cast + mana reg ..but still the p deff ;/ i guess thats the trade off

You may also make one DD toon on the same account until reach Lv. 25 to transfer in dimensional a second Moon set. Probably it will take an extra week of your time and effort, your main going to be halted until you reach this goal, but this way you will get two armor sets to change where a kind of set fits better...

This is not a bad idea. I would do another orc though. The Totem of Hestui quest is waaaay better than the shitty spider one, and if you level a new character, you might as well farm your D grade weapon in the meantime.

These kinds of decisions are always so brutal because you only get to choose once and then you're stuck with it.

I chose the Light Armor Set.

Here's what I came to a conclusion concerning Heavy Armor's usefulness to you: A) You have a good weapon that can make up for your decreased MP, MP regen, and Casting Speed. You'll be using soul strike instead of stacking 2 debuffs on a solo/duo pull. Instead, you'll probably use just one and melee bash the rest. B) Enchant your armor to give you more casting ability, C) Have some other alternative source of regeneration.

Heavy Armor seems niche, but depending upon your playstyle or if you train mobs for parties it does have its usefulness because it allows you to sustain damage while casting or to function as a soak for more squishy targets. I did notice a marked improvement in my defense against Abandoned Camp enemies, flinching off a lot more damage that would have otherwise been mortal blows simply wearing Light Armor.

With Light Armor, I never seem to be able to regenerate more than half my MP, but you can just find cheap robes, staff to swap out on such an occasion requiring rapid regen. There is a huge difference in the amount of punishment I can withstand and due to my playstyle tend to get myself into jams, which has prevented in my case, death. It's more useful in duo or solo setup, but you'll never replace a specialist by becoming more generalist. You will survive more critical strikes to the face though.

I think what ultimately cemented my choice on Light Armor was that my weapon was the novice sword (no staff, 2H, or improved blunt weapon), but didn't want to lose full casting ability because I rely a bit too heavily on my spells at this time to solo or play according to my preferred style.  I could only afford the cheap blunt in the NPC store to Over-Hit after my spells have weakened them considerably.

TL;DR You need a solid heavy hitting weapon if you're going to run heavy armor I intuit. I think this playstyle can be rewarding but was unable to commit to it with the resources I had at my disposal. I still have enough MP regen to cast the spells required of me in the party while wearing Light Armor as a nuker, but buffing on top of that is a challenge. I can soak damage better which is helpful in its own right. Robes save you lots of adena on outfitting yourself because of innate passives that accommodate it.

Thanks for all the responses on this thread so far as it has helped me refine my gameplay.

I tend to target white mobs instead of green. Personally, I don't like spamming life drain. I rarely use it and would rather use my curses to their full out extent and duration before Over-Hit. My choice of Light Armor was probably shortsighted also, but to each his own.

Does the Ol Mahum Thief spawn after you kill a certain number of Ol Mahum? I can't find them in the camp, in the yellow, and in some places I can't go solo just bleeding and draining. Please help. The L2 classic Wiki page does not have a page for this mob.

Those mobs are on top of the mountain that is around Abandoned Camp. The quest monsters are the only mobs there. You can't get up there if you go into AC. When you port to the AC spawn point, you should go up on the road until you can walk on the mountain. Basically you don't go through AC, but around it, on top of the mountain.

Considering how easy it is to get to level 25, why not make 3 characters on the same account, level all of them to 25 and complete the quest? Then you can pick all Moon armors and exchange them between characters, or move all armors to one character if necessary. In less than a day or two you'll have all of the armors that you need for every scenario.
