Not everyone can equip a rapier?

So I decided to go ahead and give an oe'd weapon a try and see what the difference was, and I purchased a Colichemarde as it was the one that I saw and I liked.  So low and behold I couldn't equip it on my Doomcryer.  I wasn't aware this was even a thing as I had no problem equiping one on my sk when i started the game.  So I thought I'd post here to make sure that this is correct, and that it isn't something that needs to be done to the weapon to equip it before I sell/trade it off.
