You should also know that BW light armor gives +2 MEN, Men giving magic defense as well as resistance to mental attacks. There are also people in the old days who wore robes vs. mages. Especially tanks to increase their their cast speed and MP. Like the Dark Avenger's fear skill. You'd have more cast speed and mp to keep fearing while your panther takes care of business.
